The Baroque Town Centre
The most prominent feature of Vukovar is the old baroque centre, covering the wider area defined by Dr Franjo Tuđman Street in Stari Vukovar, and Josip Juraj Strossmayer Street and Županijska Street in Novi Vukovar. The town centre is a protected urban historical area.
The centre of Stari Vukovar is characterised by houses with baroque arches built in the provincial baroque style of the Empress Maria Theresa period. These were once the houses of craftsmen and traders, with workshops and shops displaying the economic power of the wealthier Vukovar bourgeoisie. In the 18th century, along with the characteristic baroque style of Stari Vukovar, Novi Vukovar also received its distinctive building style. Most of the buildings in this part of town on the left bank of the River Vuka bear the traces of pure and restrained Classicism, linked to the late Baroque period. The Baroque style remained to this very day the dominant style of old Vukovar, with numerous architectural monuments of great artistic and cultural value.
Some of the buildings located in the town centre are worthy of special attention.
