Grand Hotel
This building is a famous example of monumental Historicist architecture. Its building was financed by the great landowner Paunović who intended it as a hotel. It was designed by the famous local architect Vladimir Nikolić, and construction lasted from 1895-1897. The Grand Hotel also featured a theatre hall, along with other hotel facilities. The hotel was managed by different contractors, and was finally sold to a new owner, Mišo Gotfrid, in 1918. The workers' movement was very strong at this time in Vukovar, and workers wanted to build a workers' hall. When the Grand Hotel was again put on sale in 1919, workers founded the Workers' Hall Union and by selling shares in the union, managed to collect enough money to buy the Grand Hotel, transforming it into the Workers' Hall. The 2nd Congress of the Yugoslav Communist Party was held in this building in 1920.
