The Bećarski Cross
This oldest and biggest street cross in Vukovar gave its name to the entire area of the Old Town –Kod bećarskog križa (Next to the Bećarski Cross). The cross was erected in 1805 and was the first public stone cross in the town of Vukovar (older crosses dating from the 18th century were wooden). By the end of the 19th century there was a cast-iron fence around the cross, inside which there were small trees growing. The size and rustic decorations of the Bećarski Cross make it seem like an example of rural sculpture, although its decorations bear clear signs of Classicism. The local Serbian authorities pulled it down in 1996.
This monument has great symbolic and cultural value and is waiting for a detailed facsimile reconstruction.
